Julian Assange Wins Appeal Right Over Extradition to US

Assange Faces Espionage Charges in the United States

Founder of WikiLeaks Granted Permission to Challenge UK Court's Ruling

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has been granted permission to appeal against a British court's decision to extradite him to the United States. The Australian-born Assange, 52, is wanted in the US on 18 charges, nearly all under the Espionage Act.

Assange's wife, Stella Moris, described the UK TV premiere of a film about the campaign to free Assange as "an emotional rollercoaster." The film, "Ithaka," chronicles the couple's journey to fight for Assange's freedom.

Assange has been held in London's Belmarsh prison since 2019, when he was arrested for skipping bail in a previous case. He has been fighting extradition to the US, arguing that he would not receive a fair trial there.

In January 2021, a British court ruled that Assange could be extradited to the US. However, Assange's lawyers immediately appealed the decision.

On Monday, the High Court in London granted Assange permission to appeal the extradition ruling. The appeal is expected to be heard in the coming months.

If Assange is extradited to the US, he could face a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison.
